Patton Freshman Headed to Minnesota to Train at NFL Camp

Amid the anticipation and excitement of the 2024 graduations, Patton High School Freshman, Hunter Abee, stands out for all the right reasons.

Hunter is quite familiar with the game of football, starting at a very young age. “I started playing when I was really young… 2024-2025 will be my 11th season, not including the 3 years I played travel football with the WCS Spartans. I have to admit my inspiration to play football started with my Uncle Brent telling me I was built for the sport…the rest is history. I couldn’t wait to play, watching both college and professional as much as I could.”

I wanted to know more about this young man and what has helped him along the way.

“I have learned listening to music gets my mind set, eating a good meal and staying hydrated is essential” said Hunter. I also find that remembering my favorite Bible verse (Philippians 4:13- I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me). It helps keep me grounded and focused on the game and not the fans or people in the stands. I tune out everything but, my coaches and teammates. I know we have work to do and our job is executing the plays to the best of our abilities.”

He continued, “I balance school, football and family life accordingly. I know maintaining good grades will get me where I want to go and my family supports me in doing that. We’re a football family. The advice I would give to younger athletes is to keep your head straight, work hard and never be intimidated by your opponent’s size. Also, go to as many camps as you can, you will learn something from each one. I want to continue to be an active Patton High Panther, graduate and play at the collegiate level, earning a degree in Sports Medicine.”

I wanted to know how Hunter earned a coveted football spot with a professional NFL football camp.

“I was invited to be 1 of 2 freshman from North Carolina to attend and participate in a once in a lifetime football camp with the Minnesota Vikings at the U.S. Bank Stadium.

According to Hunter’s mom, Connie, they have had a few fundraisers and received donations but, Hunter is still short of having the total amount needed. “We have a 50/50 raffle with Salem Youth Athletics that will run until the last week of May 2024.

The family also set up a Venmo and Cash App (please see below).

Burke County Youth are the best. Congratulations Hunter!!
